For those looking to explore Atlanta on a budget, the city is home to an array of complimentary attractions. Attending a performance, touring historic homes, browsing local art and learning about local government are just some of the experiences visitors can have without spending a time. To help you add some free attractions to your itinerary, here are some suggestions for free things to do in Atlanta.
Get outdoors
Atlanta is home to many beautiful parks featuring outdoor recreation. First there is the 21 acre (8.5 hectare) Centennial Olympic Park, which not only offers activities like picnicking and strolling around the many monuments, fountains, and trees, but also an array of events each year. Check out daily dancing fountain shows at 12:30pm, 3:30pm, 6:30pm and 9pm, as well as Wednesday WindDown, a Wednesday live music series taking place from April through September from 5:30pm to 8pm, and Music @ Noon, which showcases musical talent from 12pm to 1pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays from April through October. Piedmont Park is another local favorite, with 189 acres (76.5 hectares) of land for jogging, skating, biking, picnicking, fishing and sports. For a unique stroll, explore the 61.5-mile (99 km) Silver Comet Trail that runs through Georgia, perfect for walking, cycling, rollerblading and horseback riding as the route is paved and scenic. Looking for a more wild outdoor experience? Atlanta is home to an array of nature preserves, some of which include the Blue Heron Nature Preserve, Morningside Nature Preserve and Cascade Springs Nature Preserve.
Gain some knowledge
Atlanta is home to a variety of interesting and free educational attractions. Start with the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site, which takes up several blocks featuring an array of attractions and exhibits. Grab a map from the visitor center and peruse their museum, which chronicles the American Civil Rights movement and Martin Luther King Jr’s role in it. Additionally, visitors can explore the two-story home where Dr. King was born and the King Center for Non-Violent Social Change. Moreover, the Georgia State Capitol and the Capitol Museum allow visitors to see where state government takes place in Georgia, as well as learn about the state’s rich history through artifacts and exhibits.
Gallery hop in Castleberry Hill
Castleberry Hill is a charming neighborhood full of trendy restaurants, loft residences and interesting art galleries. Showcasing both local and international artists working with a variety of mediums and styles, strolling the galleries is an interesting experience. For example, visitors take in contemporary works at Marcia Wood Gallery, progressive pieces at Krause Gallery and a variety of genres from emerging talent at Artist Trifecta Gallery. Additionally, if you’re in Atlanta on the second Friday of the month you can take part in the Castleberry Hill Art Stroll, an after-hours art walk where galleries stay open late and local restaurants offer specials.
